Austin Butler might never make it to American Psycho as Patrick Bateman because of an unexpected reason.
The cult classic has caught the eye of Luca Guadagnino, who is known for movies like Call Me By Your Name and Challengers, and he wants to put out his own version of the horror fiction.
The director revealed that he would be reimagining the 2000 film starring Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, but hasn’t disclosed his pick for the lead role yet.
Although Austin was widely speculated to be taking on the iconic role, the casting director for the original, Kerry Barden, spoke out about why the Dune star shouldn’t be cast as the lead.
The 56-year-old told The Hollywood Reporter that Austin, often dubbed the 'internet’s boyfriend’, was simply too pretty to play the psychotic killer.
“I would cast Austin in Jared’s role because he’s that beautiful, and that’s why we cast Jared, is because he’s that beautiful,” he disclosed.
Jared Leto had played the character of Paul Allen, a fellow investment banker with Patrick, one who eventually ends up dead.
“Jared is certainly a great actor as well, and obviously, Austin has a lot of depth as an actor, too,” Kerry went on, before praising Austin’s good looks one more time, “But not every person has that kind of beauty.”
The Italian producer hasn’t shared much about the remake of the film first adapted by Mary Harron, but has stated that his version will closely resemble the Bret Easton Ellis novel, rather than the fan favorite movie.
No, American Psycho is not based on a true story. The fictional novel contains themes of violence and explores the negatives of the American yuppie culture through its central character, Patrick Bateman.
