Soon after the message, her admirers did exactly as they were told, with a hoard of fans gathering at the spot. However, the New York Police Department showed up before Lorde and told her fans to leave.
“Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down, I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up!!! But they’re telling me you gotta disperse … I’m so sorry,” the Sober singer told fans at 6:50 pm via Instagram stories.
In a shocking turn of events, Lorde actually did arrive at the location for a smaller crowd two hours after she had promised to be there.
The Australian crooner was joined by Dev Hynes, a longtime collaborator, who brought speakers to play a larger fragment of the song, while Lorde danced along.
