Sarah Ferguson is paying her respects to Pope Francis following his death at the age of 88.
The Duchess of York shared a touching tribute on social media shortly after news of the pontiff’s passing broke on Easter Monday.
“No better example of total humility in kindness and compassion,” she wrote. “Thank you for leading us not just with words but with your unwavering service to humanity.”
Ferguson’s message joined a global wave of grief as world leaders and royals mourn the loss of the beloved spiritual leader.
King Charles also released a statement expressing his sorrow.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of His Holiness,” he said via Buckingham Palace, adding that he and Queen Camilla were “greatly moved” to have met with the Pope just weeks earlier during their April 9 visit to the Vatican.
The monarch revealed their “heavy hearts have been somewhat eased” by the Easter message Pope Francis shared shortly before his death.
The Pope had been battling ongoing health issues in recent months, including pneumonia that required hospitalisation.
