King Charles has been on the British throne for two years now, after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch in history.
However, the future of the monarchy is being talked of more often since Charles’ ascension, given his advanced age (he was 73 when he became King), and his health struggles; the King suffers from an unknown form of cancer since last year.
While the average Briton knows that King Charles’ eldest son, Prince William, will next assume the throne, the line of succession has not always been so simple.
As per the Bill of Rights (1689) and the Act of Settlement (1701), the sovereign rules through Parliament, and succession can also be regulated by Parliament. Parliament, under the Bill of Rights and the Act of Settlement, also directed that a Roman Catholic be excluded from the line of succession.
However, the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 provided some amendments to the Bill of Rights and the Act of Settlement; these included ending the system of male primogeniture, and ending provisions disqualifying those married to Roman Catholics from the line of succession. The changes went into effect in 2015.
This essentially means that a younger son of the monarch cannot displace an elder daughter in the line of succession and so, the current line of succession to the British throne is as follows:
King Charles, SOVEREIGN
1. William, Prince of Wales
2. Prince George of Wales
3. Princess Charlotte of Wales
4. Prince Louis of Wales
5. Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
6. Prince Archie of Sussex
