King Charles and Queen Camilla had a secret audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Thursday afternoon — and the meeting was only confirmed hours before it happened.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the hush-hush visit late last night, revealing the royals met with the Pope for 20 minutes at Casa Santa Marta, where they exchanged gifts and received a warm “Happy Anniversary” from the Pontiff, who congratulated them on 20 years of marriage.

A Palace spokesperson shared: “Their Majesties were delighted The Pope was well enough to host them — and to have had the opportunity to share their best wishes in person.”

The meeting was made possible after Pope Francis, 88, showed signs of recovery from a life-threatening case of pneumonia that left him hospitalized for five weeks.

The Pope only returned to the Vatican on March 23 and continues to recover at his residence.

Earlier this week, the Pope surprised crowds in St Peter’s Square, waving from a wheelchair with an oxygen tube and saying: “Hello to everybody. Happy Sunday to all of you, thank you very much.”

The royal couple reportedly stopped by the Vatican after a visit to the Italian Parliament earlier in the day.
