Author of the popular and beloved The Vampire Diaries series, L.J. Smith has tragically passed away at the age of 66.

It was revealed to The New York Times by her partner, Julie Divola that she passed away in the hospital after having fought against a rare autoimmune disease for a decade.

Her passing, which took place in Walnut Creek, California, was also confirmed on her website.

Modeling her pen name after her favorite writers, Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien and The Chronicles of Narnia author C.S. Lewis, her birth name was Lisa Jane Smith.

Her books were adapted into the hugely successful CW series of the same name starring Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerholder, Paul Wesley, Candice King and Kat Graham.

The synopsis to The Vampire Diaries reads, “On her first day at high school, Elena meets Stefan and immediately feels a connection with him. However, what she does not know is that Stefan and his brother, Damon, are in fact vampires.”

The show then had several spinoffs of varying successes including The Originals, Legacies, The Vampire Diaries: A Darker Truth and The Originals: The Awakening.
