Prince Louis may be in line to inherit one of the Royal Family’s most historic titles — the Duke of York — but it all depends on a key royal rule and some royal timing.

As Prince William and Princess Kate’s youngest son grows up, his royal role will continue to evolve.

And if he chooses to marry one day, the crown could grant him a dukedom — with one title in particular standing out: Duke of York, currently held by his controversial grand-uncle, Prince Andrew.

However, there’s one royal catch: Prince Louis will only be eligible for the title if Prince Andrew has passed away by then, as royal tradition doesn’t allow two living people to hold the same dukedom.

Traditionally, the Duke of York title is reserved for the second eldest son of the monarch, meaning if Prince William ascends to the throne and the title is free, Louis would be the most likely candidate.

The title holds deep sentimental value in the royal lineage — it was once held by Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI, and her grandfather, King George V.

There’s also been speculation Louis could be granted the title of Duke of Cambridge someday. But that title is more likely to pass to his brother, Prince George, unless George becomes Prince of Wales without ever taking the Cambridge title.

Meanwhile, Princess Charlotte may also take on an iconic royal title herself: Princess Royal. Traditionally given to the eldest daughter of the monarch, the title is currently held by Princess Anne. If Charlotte outlives her great-aunt, the title could one day be hers.

Who is next in line for the British throne?

The British line of succession follows strict rules based on descent, legitimacy, and religion, ensuring a clear path to the throne. Currently, Prince William, Prince of Wales, is first in line to succeed his father, King Charles III, who ascended the throne after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022.

Following William, his eldest son, Prince George of Wales, is second in line, with his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, taking the third and fourth spots, respectively.
