Prince William is heading overseas for his first international trip of the year — without Kate Middleton.

The Prince of Wales announced Wednesday, March 12, that he will travel to Estonia next week to fulfill his duties as colonel-in-chief of the Mercian Regiment.

His visit, scheduled for March 20-22, will show support for British troops stationed in the NATO-backed region amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

The trip marks William’s first visit to Estonia and is part of Operation Cabrit, the UK’s military deployment to the Baltic state. According to the British Army, the mission strengthens Euro-Atlantic security and deters adversaries.

During his visit, William will meet with British troops, learn about Estonia’s response to the Ukraine conflict, and explore the country’s advancements in renewable energy and technology. He is also expected to meet Ukrainian families displaced by the war.

Royal sources told the BBC that the trip reflects “the evolution of Prince William as a global statesman” as he takes on a more prominent leadership role. As the future commander-in-chief of the British Armed Forces, the prince’s visit signals his commitment to the UK’s military presence abroad.

Kate Middleton will remain in the UK during the trip.

The Princess of Wales, who was diagnosed with cancer in early 2024, has gradually resumed royal duties following her treatment and announced in January that she is in remission.
