Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX’s appearance at last week’s Brit Awards is causing controversy.
According to the BBC, at least 825 complaints have been received by the UK media watchdog, Ofcom, regarding the ceremony held at London’s O2 Arena on March 1.
Most of the complaints were aimed at Charli XCX’s outfit and Carpenter’s pre-watershed opening performance.
Charli XCX, real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison, wore a see-through black outfit, while Carpenter kicked off the ceremony with a medley of her famous tracks such as Espresso and Bed Chem.
Carpenter was dressed in a red sparkly military-inspired mini-dress paired with matching stockings and suspenders.
An Ofcom spokesperson told the media that they are currently reviewing the complaints and have not decided whether to further investigate.
This is not the first time Ofcom has received complaints about the Brit Awards. Back in 2020, over 300 complaints were received about rapper Dave’s performance as many deemed the act offensive against white people.
Kendrick Lamar’s performance was also the subject of complaints in 2018, while Kanye West's 2015 Brit Awards appearance drew 151 complaints for racial discrimination and offensive language.
The complaints, albeit in the hundreds, are relatively low as the most complaints Ofcom has received was in 2021 when Piers Morgan’s criticism of Meghan Markle on Good Morning Britain got 58,000 objections.
