The NFL is reaping the benefits of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s high-profile romance, with a staggering $1 billion in publicity generated since the couple went public.
According to a new MarketWatch report, the so-called “Taylor Swift effect” has significantly boosted the league’s brand value, viewership, and media attention—a phenomenon that has continued throughout the 2024 NFL season and into the Super Bowl.
Swift first publicly attended a Kansas City Chiefs game in September 2023, setting off a media frenzy. According to Apex Marketing, Swift’s presence contributed to: $366,753,290 in total equivalent brand value for the NFL by January 2024; An additional $634,304,163 in publicity through January 2025; A total of $992,361,912 in media value in less than two years.
Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing, attributed the NFL’s record-breaking publicity to Swift’s influence on both sports and entertainment media.
"The 'Swift effect' and the corresponding media exposure continued for the NFL and the Chiefs prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season," Smallwood said.
He explained that as the Chiefs kept winning, national broadcasts amplified the coverage, leading to even more exposure.
"The media blitz continued as the Chiefs kept winning games and were featured on national broadcasts, leading into the playoffs and now the Super Bowl," he added.
Swift's highly visible attendance at Chiefs games played a major role in this publicity boost.
"Taylor was visible at games, and those appearances garnered media attention from sports-media outlets and those entertainment media outlets not normally covering the NFL," Smallwood explained.
With the Chiefs advancing to the Super Bowl, the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce effect shows no signs of slowing down, cementing Swift as one of the NFL’s most valuable marketing assets.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's romance began in July 2023, after the NFL star publicly revealed on his New Heights podcast that he had tried (and failed) to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his phone number at her Eras Tour concert.
A few months later, Swift attended her first Kansas City Chiefs game, and the rest is history. The couple has been inseparable ever since, with Swift attending multiple games and openly supporting her boyfriend.
