King Charles and Princess Diana’s love story may have ended in heartbreak, but its beginning was filled with grand gestures and deep emotions.
In journalist Andrew Morton’s book, Diana: In Her Own Words, the late Princess of Wales revealed that the night before their lavish royal wedding in 1981, Charles sent her a heartfelt gift along with a personal message.
"He sent me a very nice signet ring the night before to Clarence House, with the Prince of Wales feathers on and a very nice card that said: 'I'm so proud of you and when you come up I'll be there at the altar for you tomorrow. Just look 'em in the eye and knock 'em dead,’” Diana reportedly shared.
The special ring was later seen on Diana’s finger multiple times, including during the Regent Street Christmas lights switch-on later that year.
Despite the challenges that followed, Diana recalled feeling deeply in love on her wedding day, which was famously dubbed the “wedding of the century.”
"I remember being so in love with my husband that I couldn't take my eyes off him," she told Morton. "I just absolutely thought I was the luckiest girl in the world. He was going to look after me."
However, their relationship quickly took a tragic turn, leading to their eventual divorce in 1996—just a year before Diana’s untimely passing.
What was Princess Diana’s official cause of death?
Princess Diana passed away in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997. The official investigation concluded that the crash was caused by excessive speed and her chauffeur being under the influence of alcohol. Despite ongoing conspiracy theories, the French Supreme Court upheld the findings.
Even in her final years, Diana remained a beloved global figure, with her legacy continuing to shape the royal family today.
