Ana De Armas’ ‘Blonde’ bags ‘best actress’ Oscar Nomination after Razzies nomination

Ana De Armas gets nominated for Best Actress, in spite of all the hate.

Ana de Armas was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress in a leading role for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix's "Blonde," despite the film's controversy.

The NC-17 psychodrama is a fictionalised account of the private life of the 1950s and 1960s Hollywood and pop culture icons.

The film has received criticism for its depiction of trauma and suffering, which viewers found extremely grotesque and, at times, difficult to watch.

De Armas, 34, was nominated for the Oscar a day after "Blonde" received eight Razzie Award nominations, including best picture and screenplay, emphasising how divisive the film has been.

"The movie does present this idea of the perception we have of success and fame and glamour," de Armas said on NBC's "TODAY" show. "The movie shows the other side of that and the price that you pay for that."

Following its international premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year, the film received a 14-minute standing ovation. Viewers praised de Armas' emotional performance the most.

This is the actor's first Oscar nomination.

"It makes me proud to make them proud," De Armas said of her family and former acting classmates who remain in Cuba.

She is also the first Cuban to be nominated for an Oscar for a leading role. Andy Garcia, another Cuban actor, was nominated for best-supporting actor in 1990.

De Armas is one of only a few Latinas to be nominated for best actress in a leading role. They include Fernanda Montenegro for her role in the 1998 film "Central Station," Salma Hayek for her role as Frida Kahlo in the 2002 biopic "Frida," Catalina Sandino Moreno for her performance in the 2004 film "Maria Full of Grace," and Yalitza Aparicio for her performance in "Roma" five years ago.
