'The Uprising' trailer released: Andrew Garfield leads Paul Greengrass' historical adventure

Focus Features has released the first trailer for The Uprising a new historical thriller starring Andrew Garfield as the leader of a rebellion against King Richard II.

Directed, written and produced by Paul Greengrass the film is set in the aftermath of the Black Plague when King Richard II imposes harsh taxes on his subjects to fund the Hundred Years' War.

According to the official synopsis Garfield plays "the legendary leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II."

"As war burns across England, he forms an army of the people to face the King's might in a fight for justice and survival," the synopsis adds.

The film features an ensemble cast including Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston and Sky Yang.

Greengrass best known for the Jason Bourne films serves as writer, director and producer on the project with Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter and Lars Sylvest also producing.

Garfield who is a two-time Oscar nominee was most recently seen in The Magic Faraway Tree which premiered in the U.K. and is scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release on Aug. 21. 

His recent credits also include After the Hunt, We Live in Time, Spider-Man: No Way Home, tick, tick... BOOM! and The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Greengrass' latest directorial project before The Uprising was The Lost Bus starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera.

The Uprising is set to arrive in theatres on September 11, 2026.
