James Handy's tragic final moments have been revealed after a newly released medical examiner's report detailed the horrifying injuries the veteran actor suffered before his death.

The Top Gun: Maverick star, 81, died on June 4 after allegedly being attacked outside his girlfriend's home.

Initial reports claimed he had been stabbed by his girlfriend's son, Michael Gledhill, but the latest findings paint a far more disturbing picture of the fatal encounter.

According to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, the incident began with a heated verbal argument on the porch before turning violent.

Investigators say Gledhill allegedly mounted Handy during the confrontation and dragged him to the side of the house.

The report claims Gledhill then went inside the property before returning with what appeared to be a knife.

Handy was allegedly stabbed during the attack and suffered not only a fatal wound but also multiple broken ribs and signs of neck compression.

Authorities say Gledhill later called emergency services, allegedly telling the operator: "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin."

Paramedics rushed to the scene and fought to save the beloved actor before transporting him to hospital.

Despite their efforts, Jumanji star was pronounced dead at 10.48am.

Gledhill, 44, has since been charged with one count of murder, along with an allegation of using a deadly weapon.

During a hearing at Los Angeles County Mental Health Court on Tuesday, a judge ordered that he be transferred to the California Department of State Hospitals once a suitable placement becomes available, after ruling he must first have his mental competence restored.

If convicted, Gledhill could face between 26 years and life in prison.

Handy's final screen appearance came as the bartender in Top Gun: Maverick
