Sam Neill not only leaves behind one of Hollywood’s most celebrated acting legacies but also a fortune reportedly worth around $18 million (£13m) after his sudden death aged 78.
The beloved Jurassic Park star died in Sydney on Monday after what his family described as a “sudden and unexpected” passing, despite revealing earlier this year that he was cancer-free following treatment for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Sam had amassed an estimated $18 million through a career spanning more than five decades, with blockbuster films, acclaimed television roles and a thriving New Zealand wine business contributing to his wealth.
Away from the cameras, the actor found another passion in winemaking. In 1993, he founded Two Paddocks, a vineyard in Central Otago that grew into one of New Zealand’s most respected Pinot Noir producers.
Sam often delighted fans by sharing humorous updates from the estate, introducing his animals.
He named them after famous friends and fellow actors, including Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Fassbender and Anjelica Huston.
Notably, his property portfolio also reflected his success.
In 2020, Sam sold his luxury home in Sydney’s exclusive Double Bay for around $3.6 million, having bought it with former wife Noriko Watanabe in 1996.
His main residence, however, remained on New Zealand’s South Island, where he lived among the vineyards and farmland connected to Two Paddocks.
From Sleeping Dogs and The Piano to The Hunt for Red October, Peaky Blinders and Jurassic Park, Sam built a career admired across generations.
