Sam Neill, who is known for his roles in Jurassic Park and Peaky Blinders, was confirmed dead at the age of 78.

The icon’s sudden passing was confirmed in a statement which was shared on his official Instagram account which noted that he passed away on “Monday, 13th July, 2026 in Sydney, Australia.”

He was “surrounded by family and passed with dignity that has characterised his whole life.”

It was revealed in the statement that the "loss was sudden and unexpected."

Although the actor was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in March 2022, Sam was announced to be “cancer free” in April 2026.

It was noted in the message that the family is “blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free,” expressing their “deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.”

More details about the Possession star’s death “will be shared late,” requesting for privacy for now “as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”

As soon as the update was shared, the online community were shocked and offered their deepest condolences in comment section and across other social media platforms.

Alan Cumming commented: “Ahh Sam, what a glorious beautiful man. You are missed. Sorry for the family for your immense loss.”

Lesley-Ann Brandt wished: “Sending love and condolences to your family,” calling him a “remarkable man and artist. NZ loses a giant and one of its greatest gifts.”
