Madonna’s legendary hairstylist Garren has shared a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the singer’s ever-changing image.
He revealed that the Queen of Pop “loves transforming herself” and was never afraid to reinvent her look.
The stylist, who worked closely with the 67-year-old music icon throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, reflected on their decades-long partnership as renewed interest in the Confessions on a Dance Floor era has fans revisiting some of her most unforgettable hairstyles.
Speaking to Page Six Style, Garren said honesty was at the heart of their creative relationship, recalling how Madonna regularly sought his opinion on everything from her hair to her wardrobe.
“I just love making characters out of characters,” he said, before adding: “Madonna loves transforming herself.”
The pair first met during an Italian Vogue shoot and quickly developed a close working bond, with Garren revealing the songstress often relied on him to help shape her image for major public appearances.
He recalled being asked to help refine her look before the Venice Film Festival, saying the singer wanted to appear “more serious”.
While inspiration for many of her most famous styles came from classic Hollywood legends such as Marilyn Monroe and Catherine Deneuve.
Among his favourite creations were Popular hitmaker's glamorous 1995 Vanity Fair cover and her elegant hairstyle for the MTV Video Music Awards the same year, which he said elevated her image to “another level”.
Garren also looked back on the controversial Sex book and Erotica era, insisting the provocative project was surprisingly fun to create despite its scandalous reputation.
