Christie Brinkley is taking a different view on love after decades of relationships, marriage and heartbreak.
In a new interview the 72-year-old supermodel said she still believes in soulmates but no longer thinks they're always meant to last forever.
"I'm a believer in soulmates," Brinkley said. "But I don't know if they last forever in the way that I thought they would."
She added that she now believes soulmates can remain important in each other's lives even after a romantic relationship ends.
"I also believe that soulmates can transform and still be soulmates even though it's not the romantic soulmate anymore," she explained.
Brinkley has been married four times including to singer Billy Joel with whom she shares daughter Alexa Ray Joel. She has also spoken openly in the past about the end of her marriages to Jean-Francois Allaux, Richard Taubman and Peter Cook.
Despite the ups and downs Brinkley said getting older has given her a greater sense of freedom and confidence.
"I think that, with age, you get freer," she said. "You do what you wanna do when you wanna do it. You know what you like, you know what you don't like, and you don't feel like you have to put up with the stuff that you don't like anymore."
The model also reflected on the challenges she's faced over the years saying she's always tried to remain grateful regardless of life's highs and lows.
Brinkley has previously admitted she's "a fool for love" and revealed she once questioned whether she was "unlovable" after multiple failed marriages. However she later realised it wasn't about her worth but about being in relationships where she didn't feel truly loved.
Today Brinkley says her life is already filled with love through family, friends and the people around her. While she's open to finding romance again she says she's happy and content with where she is now.
