Jason Derulo is facing a wave of backlash after revealing an eye-catching and controversial feature inside his California mansion.
The 36-year-old singer gave streamer N3on a tour of his sprawling Tarzana property, casually walking across what appeared to be a normal living space, until the camera revealed sea creatures gliding beneath their feet in a submerged aquarium.
The unusual setup, designed as a showpiece in the middle of his home, has sparked fury online, with social media users branding it “cruel”, “unnecessary” and “deeply disturbing”.
On Reddit’s Fauxmoi forum, critics slammed the singer for treating living animals like interior decoration, with one user saying there was “no justification” for keeping sharks in what they described as a “tiny tank”.
Others argued the enclosure offered no real stimulation, with one commenter comparing it to a “bare pool with no enrichment."
While another suggested the animals would be better off in a proper marine sanctuary rather than beneath a celebrity’s floorboards.
Some viewers went further, calling for authorities to look into the setup, while others said aquatic animals are often underestimated in terms of care and welfare needs.
Derulo previously spoke about the aquarium in an interview with Graham Bensinger, revealing it was a long-held dream to build the dramatic feature.
He admitted there had once been multiple fish in the tank, but said the shark eventually outcompeted them, explaining that “they don’t really coexist”.
