Lewis Pullman has called the experience of seeing Rick Moranis slip back into his iconic Dark Helmet persona “mind-boggling”.

The long-awaited sequel Spaceballs: The New One prepares to blast into cinemas in April 2027.

The 33-year-old actor, son of Hollywood star Bill Pullman, appears in the follow-up to the cult 1987 sci-fi parody, which once again brings together original cast members including Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga.

But for Pullman, the real shock came from witnessing Moranis return to live-action film after more than three decades away from Hollywood.

Speaking about the moment the 73-year-old comedian stepped back into character, Pullman said hearing the familiar Dark Helmet voice again was like time travel for his ears.

He admitted it felt effortless, as if the character had never left him, calling it a “dream come true” to watch it unfold on set.

The sequel, written by Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit and Josh Gad alongside Mel Brooks, promises to poke fun at the entire sci-fi genre once again while expanding the absurd universe fans fell in love with.

Top Gun: Maverick star says the creative team has struck the perfect balance between nostalgia and fresh comedy, adding that being a fan of the original clearly helped shape the new story.

He teased that viewers can expect references and Easter eggs “for anyone who loves anything”.

Away from the galaxy far, far away, Pullman also opened up about growing up with a famous father.

He described his father as supportive but never pushy about his career choices, saying there was never pressure to follow in his footsteps.

Instead, he says his dad offers guidance through stories from his own acting journey rather than lectures, making advice feel natural, honest and easy to take on board.

With nostalgia, comedy and a long-awaited comeback all colliding, Spaceballs: The New One is already shaping up to be a major Hollywood moment.
