Scarlett Johansson has opened up about her experience working on Paper Tiger.
The 41-year-old Hollywood star described the collaboration as “such a joy” while praising director James Gray for giving actors the freedom to truly explore their roles.
The Black Widow actress leads the upcoming crime drama, written and directed by Gray, alongside Adam Driver and Miles Teller.
In the film, Scarlett plays Hester Pearl, a seemingly ordinary stay-at-home mum whose quiet life masks a powerful inner drive to change her circumstances.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said the relaxed atmosphere on set made all the difference.
“It’s not too studied. There’s room to play, and it’s such a joy to be able to work like that,” she explained, suggesting the project felt creatively freeing compared to more rigid productions.
The Jurassic World Rebirth star also shared her affection for her character, saying she was drawn to Hester’s contrast between softness and strength.
“I liked the idea of Hester being feminine and soft and graceful because she has a lot of chutzpah inside her,” she said.
The character, she added, loves romantic films, fashion magazines and window shopping, yet feels a deeper longing for more in life.
The Avengers actress admitted she could relate to Hester’s emotional journey, pointing to how many women pause their own ambitions for their families.
“It’s so common… there’s a sadness about it and a beauty about it,” she reflected.
The 57-year-old filmmaker revealed he had long hoped to work with Johansson but never expected she would agree.
To his surprise, she connected with the script immediately, calling it a “big story inside of a small story” and a role she knew she could bring something special to.
