Robert Downey Jr declares influencers won't be the ‘stars of the future’

Robert Downey Jr recently slammed online influencers, declaring they won’t be the stars of the future.

The Iron Man star reflected on the rise of social media in today’s age and even argued that real artists are different than so-called bragging influencers.

“Nowadays, people can create celebrity without ever doing much besides rolling a phone on themselves,” he said during an appearance on Conversations for our Daughters podcast this week.

Robert went on saying that he doesn’t look social media “as a negative thing” but as more like a “challenge for individuation is being upped”.

The Sherlock Holmes actor emphasised youth to create and not chase the attention online.

“Hopefully, the grosser part of the youth of - let's just call it America for locality's sake - you know, is gonna say, 'Yeah, but that's not my thing. I want to go do something, I'm going to make something, I want to build something, I want to educate myself, and I want to have more inputs, so whatever my output is, it isn't just a self-aggrandising kind of influencer-type thing,” explained the 61-year-old.

Robert further said that whenever he “hears people talk about, 'Oh, the stars of the future are going to be influencers,’” he’s like, “I don't know what world you're living into, but I think that that is absolute horses**t”.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Avengers actor recalls his youngest son give into influencer culture by offering money to a video game influencer.

Therefore, Robert is against this new-age attention economy adding, “there's something about the influencers today is almost like the evangelical hucksters of the information age”.
