Charlize Theron reflects on the night her mother fatally shot her father

Charlize Theron has recently made shocking claim about her father being shot by her mother when she was only 15.

The South African actress recalls the whole incident vividly when her father, Charles Theron, in drunken state threatened her mom Gerda at their home in South Africa in 1991.

Charlize mentions that her father was angry because his daughter didn’t greet anyone at her uncle’s house where her father was present.

The Monster actress reveals that she had bathroom emergency which is why she rushed there, but it’s a big thing in South Africa to show respect to the elders.

After leaving her uncle's house with mother, she asked her mom to take separation from her father because of his drinking and anger issue.

In her latest interview with The New York Times, Charlize shares that her father “broke into the house” the same night and started “shooting through the steel doors, common in South Africa at the time “because that’s the kind of violence that we were living in”.

“Our country was on the brink of civil war at the time,” says the 50-year-old.

However, this time her mother ran to the safe to get her gun and came into her room to protect Charlize from her father’s wrath.

Nevertheless, it was the same night when her mom shot her father in self-defense.

The Old Guard 2 actress dishes out the reason behind sharing this incident.

Charlize tells the outlet that by talking about this incident, the actress wants to help other people who are going through same situation.

“Unfortunately, this is not an isolated story… These things are prevalent in a lot of homes,” adds the actress.
