Pete Davidson may be one of Lorne Michaels’ most loyal protégés, but he’s nowhere to be seen in the new documentary about the comedy kingpin.
Fans hoping to spot the former Saturday Night Live star in the film will be disappointed, but the reason is far less dramatic than it sounds.
According to director Morgan Neville, Pete simply didn’t make the cut due to a packed schedule and an already overflowing list of interviewees.
The documentary is stacked with comedy royalty, featuring big names like Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig, all sharing their own stories about the legendary producer.
But Morgan admitted there was only so much room.
After filming chats with stars like John Mulaney, he realised the documentary was already bursting at the seams.
“It just felt like it was full,” he explained, calling the situation an “embarrassment of riches”.
Rather than cramming in more famous faces, he chose to keep the spotlight firmly on Lorne himself.
The aim was to capture the essence of the man behind decades of comedy gold, rather than turning the film into a parade of celebrity anecdotes.
Pete, who was a cast member from 2014 to 2022, has never hidden his admiration for Lorne, often describing him as a mentor and even a father figure.
And despite his absence here, there’s clearly no fallout.
In fact, the 32-year-old has made it crystal clear he’d return to the show in a heartbeat.
“I’d do anything for Lorne,” he previously said, calling the experience an “honour and a privilege”.
