Lea Thompson is opening up about the realities of aging in Hollywood, revealing that her move into directing was a strategic decision to maintain longevity in an industry with limited roles for older women.
In a recent interview, the Back to the Future star shared that she anticipated a decline in acting opportunities as she approached her 50s.
Rather than competing for what she described as less desirable roles, Thompson chose to transition behind the camera.
According to People, she explained that only a small percentage of roles are written for women over 50, and many of those parts failed to appeal to her creatively.
Determined to remain active in the industry she loves, Thompson began directing in 2006 with the Hallmark series Jane Doe, where she also starred.
Moreover, the opportunity allowed her to ease into directing while maintaining her on-screen presence.
Over the years, she has built an extensive directing portfolio, working on popular television shows such as Schooled, Mom, The Goldbergs, and Will Trent.
Alongside her directing career, Thompson has continued acting, appearing in projects including Switched at Birth and Scorpion.
Reflecting on her journey, Thompson described directing as both creatively fulfilling and empowering.
As per the outlet, she also emphasized the importance of mentorship, noting that with decades of experience, she now values guiding younger talent in the industry.
