Daniel Radcliffe looked back on his struggling childhood and how fatherhood changed that perspective.

The Harry Potter star opened up during a panel discussion after his Broadway performance in one-man show Every Brilliant Thing.

Reported by People magazine, he said, "There have been times in my life when I have been deeply unhappy, particularly when I was much younger."

The British artists added that his 20-year-old self "would not have recognised" the man he has become.

Radcliffe described a simple, happy moment from earlier that day.

He said, "I spent today with my 3-year-old son walking along the street, with him just holding my hand and being gorgeous and fun and silly — and I'm so happy."

The Jungle star stressed that even when life feels dark, there is always potential for real change and joy.

He further told the audience, "It's always worth giving the future a chance to prove you wrong."

Radcliffe described his one-man show, a play about depression and reasons to keep living, one of the most meaningful experience of his career.

"It's so special and unique," he said. "I get to meet a bunch of people before we even start, have a little chat, and then come back to those people throughout the show."

Every Brilliant Thing was written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe and directed by Jeremy Herrin.

Tickets for the play are now on sale.
