Timothée Chalamet’s remark downplaying Opera and Ballet has led to widespread backlash from the community and from netizens.

The Little Women actor’s comment from his live conversation with Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey has gone viral, in which he poked fun at the art forms.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’ All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I’m taking shots for no reason,” Timothee stated at the time.

Since then, the Metropolitan Opera, LA Opera, and Royal Ballet have taken to social media to call the actor out directly and take sarcastic jabs at him.

Moreover, individuals such as Grammy winning Isabelle Leonard, as well as Deepa Johnny, a Canadian mezzo-soprano opera singer both denounced the Dune actor, calling his words shocking and disappointing.

Megan Fairchild, who is a principal dancer for the New York City Ballet took to her Instagram to state “Timmy, I didn’t realize you were a world class dancer or opera singer, who simply chose not to pursue it because acting is more popular. Ballet and opera aren’t niche hobbies people opt out of for fame."

Timothée is facing backlash not only from these communities, but also from netizens in general that have dubbed his words disparaging to the art forms.
