Sarah McLachlan is sharing her motherhood experiences and some difficult lessons that ultimately contributed to her relationship with her eldest daughter.
The 58-year-old crooner has two daughters India Ann Sushil and Taja Summer who she shares with her ex-husband, Ashwin Sood.
During an appearance on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler, McLachlan confessed, "I would have been softer on her in a different way. I was a hard ass.”
The Canadian singer-songwriter recounted that she was parenting in a different way to how her mother parented her children.
This made the veteran artist realise that old habits were emerging when she was frustrated, notably, then the family counselling became a breakthrough.
There, she found her daughter to be in a bad state of anxiety, and her communication style was hurting her rather than benefiting her.
"The way I was communicating to her was just making her feel shitty about herself instead of building her up," she recounted.
She went on to explain, "which was completely the opposite of what I thought I was doing.”
As she was determined to regain the trust, McLachlan realized that she needed to reform.
She referred to the process as hard work yet rewarding, which has made the process quite an open affectionate relationship as it is today.
To McLachlan, it was a lesson that she needed to recast the story of parenting (as well as writing songs).
