Kate Hudson has admitted it’s been “hard” to shake off her rom-com image, despite the feel-good films making her a household name.
The 46-year-old actress, known for hits like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Bride Wars and Fool’s Gold, told the Santa Barbara International Film Festival audience that the very movies that brought her fame sometimes held her back.
“It was clear that that’s where the industry liked to hire me,” she explained, adding that her focus was always on making the “best versions” of the films.
“But when you become really famous doing that genre, it’s hard for certain filmmakers to see you in anything else.”
Kate, who is a single mum, revealed there were moments when the lure of money and stability made her hesitant to branch out but her heart has always been in more challenging roles.
“I really want to be doing something different,” she said.
The Skeleton Key actress also defended rom-coms as a tricky genre to perfect, insisting they demand the same care as any “great film.”
Her recent Oscar nod for Song Sung Blue, her second after Almost Famous, has renewed her hope for new opportunities.
“This feels like the beginning of maybe that part where I get to do a little more transformations than maybe I’ve been able to do in the past,” she said.
Kate recalled wise words from stepdad Kurt Russell after her 2021 nomination: “Congratulations, now you can go have a career. Everything happens and in a second it’s all over.”
