The movie is based on the 1818 book Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus written by Mary Shelly which is often considered one of the first works of science fiction in English Literature.

Guillermo explained the movie to be his own “DNA” which he had been working on for a long time after having read the book for the first time at the age of 11.

“It’s so personal to me, it’s so biographical to me, it is the DNA of what I know about the romantics, the DNA of what I know about Mary Shelley, the DNA of my own story”, the filmmaker said.

The filmmaker also gave in sight into the casting process revealing that Oscar Isaac was always his first choice to play Dr. Victor Frankenstein.

However, for the creature he first picked Andrew Garfield, who pulled out weeks before the filming was scheduled to begin.

The director recalled finding Jacob Elrodi as the new creature who convinced him saying “This creature is more me than me”.
