28th British Independent Film Awards honours Sentimental Value with the Best International Independent Award, held on Sunday night, November 30.

Sentimental Value follows middle-aged office worker Victor, who unexpectedly inherits a mysterious antique from a late relative. As he uncovers the item’s hidden history, Victor is drawn into a journey of nostalgia, lost loves, and family secrets.

The film explores how objects can carry memories and emotions, forcing Victor to confront his past, mend fractured relationships, and rediscover the importance of human connection in a life consumed by routine.

The 2025 movie stars Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning, alongside supporting roles from Cory Michael Smith, Anders Danielsen Lie, Lena Endre, and Jesper Christensen.

At its Cannes premiere, Sentimental Value stunned the audience, earning a record‑breaking standing ovation that lasted a jaw‑dropping 19 minutes.

The applause reportedly stretched well past 1:00 a.m., making it the longest ovation of the festival and ranking among the longest in Cannes history.

Directed by Joachim Trier, who co-wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt, the movie is produced by Maria Ekerhovd and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar alongside multiple European production houses.

The film premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was theatrically released in Norway on September 12, 2025, with international distribution handled by Mubi.
