Meghan Markle is facing fresh accusations of deliberately amplifying her use of the Duchess title in a calculated attempt to cement it into her public identity, amid growing speculation that Prince William may eventually strip both her and Prince Harry of their royal styles when he becomes King.
Royal commentators claim the Duchess of Sussex, 44, has increasingly leaned on her title since stepping back from royal life in 2020 and relocating to the United States with Prince Harry, 41.
Their departure sparked years of scrutiny, and experts now say Meghan’s recent behaviour suggests “pre-emptive branding” as a protective measure in case her Duchess title is removed in the future.
The controversy intensified after Meghan’s latest Harper’s Bazaar profile, where journalist Kaitlyn Greenidge described being formally greeted as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex” by a house manager, despite the two women being the only ones present.
Reports also claim she had her title announced during a visit with schoolchildren at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
The Royalist reports that Meghan’s repeated use of her title and the Sussex surname appears to be a deliberate strategy to ensure they remain entrenched in public consciousness, even if the Royal Family opts to strip them.
Insiders warn that Prince William may pursue similar action as a future monarch.
According to reports, he is considering issuing an executive order to change the laws that currently prevent removal of Prince or Princess titles.
If implemented, the move could target Prince Harry, Meghan, and even their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, as well as Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who are non-working royals.
