Meghan Markle’s exit from the Royal Family may have been triggered by one decisive “final straw,” according to a royal biographer who claims Frogmore Cottage became the tipping point that pushed the Duchess of Sussex toward life in America.

Before stepping back as senior royals, Harry and Meghan lived in two different royal residences. Their first home as a married couple, Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace, was reportedly a disappointment for the pair due to its “tiny” size and lack of space.

Hoping for a fresh start away from the pressures of London, the Sussexes moved to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, a home gifted to them by Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple believed it would be “the perfect retreat from what Meghan and Harry saw as an unsympathetic, unfair world of media speculation and criticism,” royal author Tom Quinn wrote.

But according to Quinn’s book Kensington Palace, Meghan quickly came to resent Frogmore’s isolation.

He revealed that the Duchess felt living there “would be like living in the Russian steppe.”

A source told the author that the estate’s “remoteness made Kensington seem like the centre of the universe.”

Quinn says the move ultimately became the “final straw” for Meghan, who allegedly told those close to her: "I don't want to retire to rural obscurity."
