David Beckham has revealed he “shed a few tears” after receiving his long-awaited knighthood from King Charles at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old former Manchester United and England star was honoured for his services to sport and charity, calling it “a very emotional day”.

Surrounded by wife Lady Victoria, parents Ted and Sandra, and children Romeo, Cruz, and Harper, Beckham described the moment as one his family would “forever cherish”, though eldest son Brooklyn was notably missing.

“Today has been such an emotional day — more emotion than nerves, in all honesty,” he told The Sun

“There have been a few tears and a lot of pride. It’s something we can all be proud of as a family.”

While reflecting on his journey from Leytonstone to knighthood, Beckham added: “To receive such an honour from His Majesty — one of the most elegant men in the world — is surreal.

As a boy from the East End who dreamed of playing for Manchester United, this is beyond anything I imagined.”

Beckham said having his charity work recognised made the honour “even more special”.

“It started when I was 15, visiting children in hospitals,” he said. “That work will always continue. But today is a day to savour.”
