Scarlett Johansson hints at role in Disney’s live-action ‘Tangled’

Oscar-nominated actress Scarlett Johansson is finally speaking up about reports suggesting she has joined the cast of Disney's live-action adaptation of Tangled.

Speaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Johansson told Entertainment Tonight that she laughed when asked if there’s a “real possibility” she will play the villain Mother Gothel from the 2010 animated hit.

“Is there a real possibility?” Johansson replied with a smile. “I think anything is possible. What would excite me about it would be the opportunity to work with Michael Gracey, who is attached to direct the film, because he’s just an absolutely extraordinary visionary, and any actor would love to have that collaboration with him.”

News of Disney’s plan to develop a live-action remake of Tangled, directed by The Greatest Showman filmmaker Michael Gracey, first surfaced in December 2024.

However, as Deadline reported on October 9, production was halted in April after the studio’s Snow White remake starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot failed to meet box office expectations.

While casting details remain under wraps, Johansson is reportedly in talks to play Mother Gothel, the villain who imprisons Rapunzel, a role originally voiced by Donna Murphy in the 2010 animated classic.
