In the weeks leading up to his death, soul legend D’Angelo was surrounded by his closest loved ones as he battled pancreatic cancer.

A source told PEOPLE that the Untitled (How Does It Feel) hitmaker, born Michael Eugene Archer, “was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months.”

By his side throughout was his 27-year-old son, Mike Jr., whom he shared with the late R&B singer Angie Stone.

“His son was there with him and had been with him in the hospital,” the insider said. “People are really worried about Mike right now; his mom died a day after his birthday and now six months later he’s burying his dad.”

Stone’s sudden passing in a car accident on March 1 left Mike Jr. heartbroken, a grief that’s now deepened by his father’s death. “He’s been through a lot in such a short amount of time,” the insider added.

According to the source, D’Angelo had retreated from public life long before his illness. “He was a recluse; he didn’t like going out of the house,” they shared.

“He never was comfortable being a sex symbol… he was always really conflicted,” the source continued. “Such an amazing talent is gone.”
