The 2025 Emmy Awards found a creative way to trim down lengthy speeches by the winners.
Comedian and host of the prestigious TV award show, Nate Bargatze, took to the stage and explained how the producers found a way to cut down speeches.
He said, “Everybody gets 45 seconds and honestly give your speech, and I know how hard you guys have all worked.”
Bargatze went on to explain the rules, “I’m not trying to take anything away. I am gonna donate $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of America.”
He turns towards the audience and continues, “If you stay for 45 seconds, it stays at $100,000. Every second you go over 45, we will deduct $1000 away.”
The celebrities in the crowd appeared amused by the new rules: “But if you go under, we will put a $1000 a second back on. Don’t go crazy, though, because I am paying for this.”
The actor concluded his message with a joke: “Some of you go under, some go over. Do the right thing.”
Notably, in order to keep the money intact at $100,000, winners gave hilarious responses in their speeches. For example, John Oliver raced through his speech in one breath to win back some money.
However, Owen Copper, the youngest male lead winner of the Emmy, was given a pass since it was his first win and he had made history with his performance in Adolescence.
And the writing team of The Studio delivered a lengthy speech, which dipped the counter to a negative number.
The total amount came up to $350,000 at the end of the ceremony. Bargatze added another $250,000 after it dipped into the negative, and the CBS network donated $100,000.
