Conservative activist and media personality Charlie Kirk has been fatally shot on a Utah college campus, and the suspected shooter is in custody now.

The person suspected of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk on a Utah college campus on Wednesday, Sept. 10, is now in custody.

Kirk, who has been a close ally of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot at a Utah Valley University event on Wednesday. The act has triggered the threat of political violence across the U.S.

Trump announced the activist’s death via social media, adding praises for Kirk, the co-founder and CEO of the youth organisation Turning Point USA, as “Great, and even Legendary.”

“No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

Kirk was addressing a debate organised by his nonprofit political group. Just moments before the shooting, he was fielding an audience question on mass shootings and gun violence.

The Utah governor, Spencer Cox, called Kirk's killing "a political assassination" while giving remarks to reporters.

Whereas, authorities give mixed answers on the suspect, but say a person of interest is in custody.

Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed to reporters that the suspect remains at large, while Utah Gov. Cox revealed a person of interest is being questioned over Kirk’s fatal shooting.

Mason said the only information we have on the suspect is from CCTV footage from campus.

"We do have that we're analyzing it, but it is security camera footage, so you can kind of guess what the quality of that is," Mason said. "We do know dressed in all dark clothing, we don't have much better description."
