Anna Wintour recently shut down nepotism rumours regarding Chloe Malle’s appointment as the new Editor-in-Chief of Vogue.
On September 2, the 75-year-old fashion mogul announced Malle as her successor, and netizens found out that the 39-year-old journalist is related to actress Candice Bergen.
However, Wintour sat down with David Remnick for The New Yorker Radio Hour episode and revealed that Malle went through a rigorous interview process, just like the rest.
She said, “I love Chloe; she has done a brilliant job, but at the same time, she had to prove herself in the interview process. We saw amazing candidates, and Chloe consistently came back with the clearest vision and original ideas.”
The businesswoman stated that the August ‘Dogue’ cover shoot, which featured celebrities' pet canines accessorised in scarves and collars, was Malle’s idea.
Wintour also added, “She understands media, and that fashion doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Plus, she has a great sense of humour.”
Notably, Malle’s mother, Bergen, is known for her roles in films such as Miss Congeniality, Book Club, and Murphy Brown. She also played Enid Frick, an Anna Wintour-inspired character on Sex and the City.
Chloe Malle has worked as a social editor for Vogue since 2011. She spent a decade alongside Wintour and switched to a contributing editor position in 2016.
