Meryl Streep opened up about attending her first fashion in Milan during the filming of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Streep plays Miranda Priestly cold, sharp fashion mogul and editor-in-chief of the Runway magazine.
During a conversation with or SiriusXM’s Front Row alongside a few of her co-stars including Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, the Mamma Mia! star revealed that it was the "first fashion show" that she’s ever been to.
“I was so excited,” Streep told host Andy Cohen. “You know me in my real life. I have never been to a fashion show, clearly. It was really exciting, and I didn't know it was so theatrical.”
Recalling her surprise appearance while dressed as her movie character in camel-coloured latex trench coat with a leopard-print belt, black pants, white sunglasses, and satin pumps, she sat opposite to Anna Wintour, who famously inspired the role of Runway magazine’s editor-in-chief in the 2006 film.
“Nobody knew where I was looking,” she quipped, referring to her character’s signature eyewear. “That was so good. Now I know why she does that.”
Talking about her interaction with Wintour at the show, the Death Becomes Her actress said, “She's a really — she's so smart and funny and forgiving and understanding.”
Streep shared that she didn’t truly get to know Vogue’s editor-in-chief until after the first 2006s film was released.
She explained that her approach to Miranda was intentional, noting, “I just wanted to create my own Miranda,” adding that she imagined how she herself would act in a position of power.
Reflecting on her relationship with Wintour over the years, she revealed that the fashion icon later reached out to ask about the sequel.
Streep reassured her saying, “I think it's going to be good. You're not going to be worried.’ And I still feel that way.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set for release in theatres on May 1.
