Oscar-nominated actor Austin Butler slept in his Caught Stealing apartment to get into character, but what happened next turned his learning experience into an embarrassing moment.

Butler is widely recognised for his meticulous, hands-on approach to roles and projects.

The Golden Globe-winning star even trained with a Navy SEAL to embody the fearsome Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two.

However, for his upcoming thriller Caught Stealing, Butler plays Hank, a former baseball player turned bartender. To connect with the role, he decided to spend a night in the set designed as his East Village apartment.

“For one night, I had the whole apartment to myself,” he told Variety. “I played music, I danced around, and I ate Chinese food in there. It made me feel like I really lived there. I slept there all night, and I woke up to the crew coming in while I was in my underwear.”

Butler believes it’s essential to make a set feel like home, even for a night, because it helps him immerse himself in the character.

“There are many things that conspire against you when you’re making a movie,” he explained. “You’ve got the lights and the camera, and the set doesn’t have a ceiling because they’ve got to light it from above. It’s tempting to look around and break the illusion. So the more I can do to trick myself, the more important it is.”

Caught Stealing will open in theatres on Aug. 29.
