Comedy powerhouse Jessica Williams admitted she wouldn’t have a normal reaction if she won the 2025 Primetime Emmy for her role in Shrinking.
The HBO comedy voice has been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Gaby Evans.
Williams recalled how tense it can be during the announcements of nominees.
“There is this moment you get when you’re nominated — and I don’t know if all actors get it — you’re like, ‘Okay, I’m not going to win,’” the actress told PEOPLE.
But just before the winner’s name is revealed, Williams said, “you have five seconds where you’re like, ‘Holy s---, what if I actually win?’”
Adding a joke, the Netflix rom-com lead said the announcers then call someone else’s name and “you’re like, ‘Yeah, no, they deserve it. I wasn’t. But there is that five seconds where you’re just like, ‘What if I…?’ That’s weird, right? It’s the moment you believe for a little second.”
“You’re like, ‘Wait, what?’” she added. “I think I would just be like, ‘What?’ I think I’ll just do that: ‘What? Are you serious?’”
If Williams takes home the Emmy this year, it would mark her first-ever win.
“Getting nominated for an Emmy… it’s an affirmation, like, ‘Wow, that character is working, that works,’” Williams said. “I still have to pinch myself sometimes, like, ‘Wow, a jury of my peers voted to nominate me for that part. That’s really special and seems almost impossible.’ I feel really lucky.”
