Austin Butler makes surprising revelation on playing James Bond

Oscar-nominated actor Austin Butler has ruled himself out of the 007 casting speculation, saying that playing James Bond would be “sacrilegious.”

In an interview with Hit Radio UK, the actor admitted that taking on the role of the British MI6 agent would feel “kind of sacrilegious” for someone born and raised in California, despite his admiration for the franchise.

Even though he would love to reunite with his Dune: Part Two (2024) director Denis Villeneuve, Butler dismissed the idea.

“No calls as far as that goes, but I love that man,” he told the outlet. “Would I play James Bond? I don’t think that would be a good idea. Because I’m an American. I can do an accent, but that would be kind of sacrilegious.”

Butler added, “Those movies meant so much to me, but I think it’s gotta be somebody who is from [England].”

However, he didn’t rule out joining the franchise in another way: “Villain? That would be alright. I’d do that.”

Interestingly, actor Glen Powell shared a similar view, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “A Texan should not play James Bond.”
