‘Summer I Turned Pretty’s’ Gavin Casalegno slaps back on hate comments

Gavin Casalegno has been playing Jeremiah Fisher in Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, but he has finally addressed the hate comments his character has been receiving.

In an interview published by The New York Times on Thursday, Aug. 21, Casalegno admitted that fans dislike his character, but since he no longer checks Instagram, he “hasn’t seen that much hate.”

“The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny,” he added. “I think it’s important to also understand and realize that this is a fictional story, and it’s also not me.”

He pointed out that there’s no “human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens.”

Casalegno plays Jeremiah, one of the central love interests of teen protagonist Belly Conklin, across all three seasons of Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Adapted from Jenny Han’s bestselling YA novels, the story follows Belly (Lola Tung) as she navigates a complicated love triangle with brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah.
