Hollywood character actor Shawn Hatosy has earned Emmy recognition after building a career on complex, layered roles in gritty dramas.

From playing a serial killer in Dexter to a troubled cop in Southland and Chicago P.D., and most famously the volatile, unhinged family man in Animal Kingdom, Hatosy has always sought specific qualities in a character before stepping into the role.

However, despite several career-defining performances, Hatosy’s Emmy nomination came for his portrayal of Dr. Jack Abbot, a combat medic turned emergency physician at a struggling Pittsburgh hospital in The Pitt.

The Pitt, produced by John Wells, first connected Hatosy to the team in 2006 when he appeared as a guest star on an episode of ER, playing a patient with dissociative identity disorder.

The actor enjoyed the collaboration and hoped “we get a chance to do it again.”

As luck would have it, Hatosy and Wells later reunited on Southland, Animal Kingdom, and Rescue HI-Surf, which eventually led to their partnership on The Pitt Season 1.

After a series of standout roles, Hatosy’s talent has finally been recognised by audiences and the industry in the way many felt it always should have been.

His first Emmy nomination not only marks a milestone in his career but could also prove life-changing. Still, the actor insists his approach to the craft remains the same.

“I’m still going to fight for the things that I want,” Hatosy told The Hollywood Reporter. “I still see myself as a working-class actor. That’s what I am, and there’s a responsibility there. I take pride in it.”
