Sharon Stone, best known for her breakout role in Basic Instinct, is not entertaining the idea of a reboot of her iconic erotic thriller.
Last month, Amazon, MGM Studios’ United Artists announced that Basic Instinct will be remade with the original film’s screenwriter, Joe Eszterhas, on board.
However, fans were unsure if Stone would reprise her legendary role as Catherine Tramell. In an interview with Today, Stone made it clear that audiences should stop expecting her to return to the part.
“If it goes the way the one I was in went, then I would just say I do not know why you would do it,” Stone said, referring to her comeback as Catherine in 2006’s Basic Instinct 2, which flopped at the box office and was universally panned by critics. “Go ahead. Good f***ing luck!”
Host Craig Melvin was stunned by her bluntness, to which the Oscar nominee responded that she no longer cares what people think of her.
“I’m at that stage in my life where I already retired once,” she explained. “And I already died a couple times. I’m like, ‘What are you going to do? Kill me again? Go ahead.’”
Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct starred Michael Douglas as a detective investigating a rock star’s murder, with Stone playing the enigmatic writer who becomes his prime suspect.
The film became a global box office sensation, grossing $352.9 million worldwide and ranking as the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year.
