Why Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson might be the most loyal exes in royal history

Despite their divorce nearly three decades ago, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson continue to defy expectations of what a post-marriage relationship can look like.

Writing in The Sun, royal photographer Arthur Edwards, who has captured the Duchess of York on camera for more than 40 years, declared: “Sarah and Andrew are still very close and will be until the day they die.”

The couple, both 65, tied the knot in 1986 and went on to have two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Though they separated in 1992 and formally divorced in 1996, they have remained remarkably close, even continuing to live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Their enduring friendship has raised eyebrows over the years, with Sarah famously describing them as “the happiest divorced couple in the world.”

Throughout the Duke of York’s widely scrutinized association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Sarah remained unwavering in her public support.

The Duchess has accompanied her ex-husband during rare public outings, including the family’s Easter Sunday service at Windsor earlier this year.

Critics have often speculated on her motives, but Ferguson has spoken openly about her loyalty to Andrew, citing love, mutual respect, and enduring affection.

In a previous interview with The Times, she reflected: “I was totally and utterly in love with Andrew. I would do it all over again, 100 per cent. He's the best, a great man with a great heart, and kind."

She added: “I won’t let him down. He supports me as much as I support him… We agree on the three Cs — communication, compromise, compassion.”
