Who knows what Jane Austen would have thought of this.

However, these first-look images of Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet in Netflix's latest adaptation of Austen's Pride and Prejudice imply that the Crown actress is embracing the character's sardonic humour and spirit of independence.

Between takes on set, Emma, dressed in a period costume and sporting a curly wig, was spotted holding her cherished dog Spencer, demonstrating that significant relationships can take many different forms, just like in the book.

Later, the actress was seen eating a banana and laughing with Freya Mavor, who plays Jane, Elizabeth Bennet's sister, on a rooftop, looking even less like a Georgian heroine.

Emma also seemed to sigh in fear as she carefully descended some scaffolding.

The 29-year-old, who received praise for her portrayal of a young Princess Diana in The Crown, is frequently spotted strolling around Spencer's house in Margate and in north London, where he shared a £5 million home with 44-year-old Oscar winner Rami Malek star of Bohemian Rhapsody.
