Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel’s newest take on its first family, has finally dropped in theaters after major buildup.
Similar to the critics, the response from the audiences also seem to be mixed, with some loving the film and others finding it lacking.
One audience member wrote on iMDB, “Pedro nails Reed's stoicism and dashing brilliance, while Joseph makes Johnny feel ever so valiant. But man, I can't remember the last time I adored two Marvel heroes like Ebon's Ben and Vanessa's Sue. They hold the family together and ground the others when no one else can. Silver Surfer is perfection with this metallic voice and looks really really good. Galactus is awesome in IMAX.”
A fan of the comics gave their thoughts on the comparability factor, writing, “I have been reading and owning the Fantastic Four paper comics since 1973 (when it came to Norway for the first time with norwegian translation) and up to the last one in 1987 (altogether 43 magazines/comics editions). This new film reminded me much of original happenings from these magazines. A very good adaption.
I will not give away much more, so I will recommend you to go and see the film for yourself!”
One user admitted to finding it lacking, “This movie is better than all fantastic four movies and is definitely an enjoyable marvel movie. But it doesn't give much depth to characters but definitely make them enjoyable to watch. It's a fun watch but nothing like a masterpiece. Overall the new silver surfer was decent but Galactus felt way to underwhelming.”
Another agreed, claiming, “It's a fun watching, but nowhere near a 'Marvel Jesus' moment. Many fans are saying Marvel is back this time - but honestly, it just made me question my life. Vanessa Kirby is an absolute like shine gem in this role, but the villain Galactus felt far too underwhelming. Many actors in this film have been marginalized or typecast. Marvel totally wasted Natasha Lyonne on the role of Rachel Rozman - the script gave her barely any room to shine. The character felt flat, with no standout moments at all.”
