It would not be incorrect to say that the word “success” should become synonymous with Kendrick Lamar at this point.

The Compton native won five awards at this year’s Grammys, including the coveted Record of the Year for his diss track Not Like Us.

The rapper went on to win Album of the Year for GNX at the BET Awards, which was followed by Lamar and his collaborator SZA grabbing the Favorite Music Collaboration trophy for their song Luther at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.

The same track has been breaking all sorts of records since it came out on 29 November 2024.

Titled after R&B legend Luther Vandross, the hit song was released as the third single from the GNX album.

It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 straight weeks and climbed to number 15 on the list of all-time longest-leading hits on the chart.

On Tuesday, HipHopDX reported that Luther has become the fastest single to surpass one billion streams on Spotify.

This breaks the previous record, also held by Lamar’s scathing diss track Not Like Us, which took eight months to achieve the milestone.

The outlet also reports that Luther is only the eleventh song to cross one billion Spotify streams, signifying the rarity of the achievement.

Who directed the ‘Luther’ music video?

The music video of Luther (much like NOKIA) was shot in black and white and is directed by Drake’s ex-collaborator and fellow Canadian Karena Evans.

Evans previously called the shots for many of Drake’s music videos, including God’s Plan and I’m Upset.
